Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Captain Marvel is the 21st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series. Even so, the Captain Marvel plot actually took place before the Avengers was formed, namely in the 1990s.
The story opens in 1995, featuring a member of the Starforce named Vers (Brie Larson). Starforce is a military team of the Kree, an alien race that has super-advanced technology.
Vers has amnesia and often dreams about a woman. Through dreams, he can also see pieces of his past, although not completely.
Assisted by Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), a commander and mentor, Vers tries to control his abilities. On a mission, Vers is kidnapped by the Skrulls, shapeshifter aliens who become enemies of the Kree.
The Commander of the Skrulls, Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), is the one who captures Vers. He had entered Vers' memory to find out about a female scientist from Vers' past who came from Earth.
Talos' action triggers a confrontation with Vers until both of them are stranded on Earth. Vers' appearance on Earth invites the attention of two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg).
Together with Fury, Vers visits Project Pegasus at US Air Force headquarters. From this it is known that Vers was a pilot who died in 1989.
The cause was an accident when he was undergoing experimental experiments with a light-speed engine designed by Dr. Wendy Lawson (Annette Bening). Vers immediately recognized Dr. Wendy Lawson as a woman who often appears in his dreams.
